Press On is a mental health course designed to assist Christian believers in maintaining their mental wellbeing so they can continue faithfully in Christ’s service. Press On is a seven-session course, drawing upon biblical truth, as well as key insights from psychological science.
It is available in two formats: as an online course, making it easy for individuals to work through on their own and as videos, making it easy for churches to run in small groups.
Why create Press On?
The pandemic and lockdown helped to put mental health on everyone’s radar. This course is designed to assist ordinary Christian believers in maintaining their mental wellbeing so they can continue faithfully in Christ’s service. To use the language of Paul we are encouraged to ‘press on’ in our walk with Christ (Phil 3:12-14).
Every person experiences challenges throughout their life. It might be financial difficulties, moving to a new city or country, or the loss of a loved one. These can all impact our mental health.
Leading mental health experts have highlighted the need for preventative programs that support good mental health. This course meets this need from a distinctively Christian perspective.

Is this online mental health course for me?
We believe this course can do you a lot of good. And in so doing, enable you to continue to do good to others.
Press On is a resource developed specifically for Christians, highlighting the particular benefits for wellbeing associated with Christian faith. You can work through the course individually, at your own pace from the comfort of home.
Paul and Margie Sheely share what inspired them to do the Press On course.
Margie and Paul Sheely speak about the benefits they found from doing ‘Press On’, and talk through the different aspects of the course.
How the Press On course works
There are seven sessions in the online course. In each session, there are a number of short videos, interspersed with ‘over to you’ breaks so you can reflect on the content and engage with the questions provided in the workbook.
You can work through each session at your own pace – in one sitting, or you could work through it more slowly in 20–30-minute chunks of time. Each session contains three or four sub-sections, so you could work through the sessions one sub-section at a time.
Once you have access to the course via our online store, you will have 14 weeks to complete it. As a rough guide there is enough content in each session to fill at least one hour, but you will get more out of this course if you work through it more slowly.
We recommend you work through this online course on a computer or tablet device such as an iPad. There’s a comprehensive PDF workbook to download and interact with on the same device or on a smart phone – so you can make use of more than one device. Alternatively, you can also print out the workbook yourself if you prefer to handwrite notes and answers to activities.
How much does Press On cost?
The Press On course is $59.95. You will have access to the course for 14 weeks, which is ample time to complete the 7 sessions within the Press On: Building Resilience & Mental Wellbeing course.
Included is access to the comprehensive interactive workbook which you can download as a PDF for note taking. It is a useful resource for future reference.
Helpful feedback from mental health experts
"As Christians, it is not self-indulgent to focus on our own mental wellbeing. Rather by looking after ourselves we are best placed to live out God’s great commands of loving Him and loving our neighbour. Through the course modules, Keith and Sarah continue to point us to God’s grace. We are reminded that we don’t have to ‘perform’ for God, as he has done that for us through Christ. Resting in this truth can go far to helping each of us de-stress, serve others and enjoy what life has to offer."
Mike Sheedy
Head of Mental Health, Anglicare
"Keith and Sarah have extracted resources and knowledge from medicine, psychology and self care, and distilled these in a helpful and theological sound way to enable us all to develop and experience better mental wellbeing."
Dr Stephanie Fox
GP at Glebe Family Medical Practice
"Press On is a wonderful experience that will help churches to gently, biblically support people. Keith and Sarah’s warmth and lived experience (along with the others who share their stories) make this a relate-able and encouraging course."
Ruth Holt
Clinical Psychologist, Canberra Clinical and Forensic Psychology
"Press On is accessible, beautifully produced and pastorally sensitive. Most importantly it provides what is often lacking: a space to do some serious, structured reflection to put the theory of psychological resilience into practice."
Leisa Aitken
Clinical Psychologist (private practice)
"This accessible course helps Christians to understand the components of mental well being and its significance for living ‘life to the full’. A unique and engaging program for small groups learning and growing together and personally relevant for all stages of faith."
Sarah Piper
Registered Psychologist, The Resilience Centre
"An accessible and informative course that focuses on holistic care of the mind, body and soul. This program will be a fantastic resource for both churches and individuals."
Betsy Rogers
Director of Wellbeing & Care, The Bridge Church
"This course is a timely and helpful one. Press On can help us notice and care for our inner world. The practical tools and weekly homework are a great strength of this course."

Are you a church or organisation?
Press On: Building Resilience & Mental Wellbeing provides an easy means of promoting good mental health from a Christian perspective in your church or organisation and beyond. Invest in mental wellbeing by including the course in your church or organisation’s annual program. And why not offer the course outside the church as a means of serving the local community.
Churches, bible study groups, and other organisations can run this course and complete it together. This allows for more collaboration between participants and is a great way to provide mental health and wellbeing services within your community.
You can run Press On in two ways: in person or online. We recommend you run the course in person.
Along with the course videos and workbooks, group registrations will also receive a Facilitator Manual with tips on how to help your group get the most out of the course.
Paul and Margie Sheely share how they are using the course to benefit their church and their experience in facilitating the course for a group.
How to run a Press On course in person
As a church or organisation, it’s easy to run the course in person to demonstrate your commitment to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of your church family.
-
Step 1
There are two ways you can facilitate the use of this course in your church or organisation:
Set a date and venue to run the Press On course centrally in one place and invite anyone to attend over a seven session timeframe that works best in your church calendar. Read about a church's experience of running the course. We recommend you provide people with the chance to self-select the type of workbook they prefer - online interactive or print.
Use your small group networks - encourage your small bible study groups to set aside one term in the calendar year to work through the course together. Read about one small group's experience of running the course.
We recommend that groups set aside two hours to work through each session. This will provide time for group discussion and a chance to have a cuppa midway through the session. You can get through each session in ninety minutes, but there will be less time for group discussion. -
Step 2
Purchase the video downloads. You can purchase the participant workbooks in two formats:
Print workbooks - once you have ordered they will be shipped separately
Downloadable workbook - an interactive pdf that the participant can use on their laptop computer or tablet device
Order the number required in either format.
(Please note that the print workbooks are available only in the Australian market.) -
Step 3
We have made running the course as easy as we can. You are not required to provide teaching input. It’s all provided for you! All you have to to do is provide a facilitator (and we recommend you have two), to host and run the course. The facilitator manual provides simple instructions on how to host and run the course. If bible study groups run the course, the leader can facilitate easily.
-
Step 4
Decide whether you want to charge participants to cover expenses. Finally, download the free materials for promotion.
Helpful feedback from churches and other organisations
"This timely and invaluable resource should be essential viewing for all Christians but particularly those in ministry roles, so they can flourish and keep pressing forward to love and serve Jesus without growing weary."
Sally Sims
Care Ministry Co-ordinator, Christ Church, St Ives
"A clear, helpful and professional course which is so needed at this time. Keith and Sarah bring an intelligent, thoughtful and heart-warming approach to mental health, surely one of the great issues of our times."
Rev. Edward Vaughan
Lead Consultant, City to City Australia
"Mental Wellbeing is one of the primary pastoral care needs in my church. Press On created the space for us to biblically and practically gain the understanding and skills needed to maintain mental wellbeing in our circumstances. We had members from all ages and stages of life participate in the course and find it helpful both for themselves and as they cared for loved ones. The group setting provided camaraderie and diversity of wisdom and ideas."
Jess Donohue
Community and Pastoral Care Minister, St Stephen's Normanhurst Church
"We are pleased to be running Press On as a group. We had identified that the last two years had been very stressful for people, and in reality, they were ’not coping’. This course has helped us to build our resilience, and it has helped us to focus on habits and patterns which can help alleviate the effects of prolonged stress. We have seen a keen interest in the course, showing that there is a need we are able to meet by running Press On. It has already been helpful as each week participants have been strengthened to act and reflect on their lives in a positive way. We are especially thankful for how the course is framed, what is clear is that we wish to achieve resilience and mental wellbeing, in order to be a blessing to others."
Steve Carlisle
Senior Minister, Helensburgh / Stanwell Park Anglican Church
How to run a Press On course online
As a church or organisation, it’s easy to run the course online to allow participants to join in from the comfort of their homes, or include people who may be far away.
-
Step 1
Set a date for the course and promote it in your church and local community. Download the promotional material below to help get the word out.
-
Step 2
Once people have registered with you, contact us to submit your group registration form. We’ll then give you a code to purchase the course with the relevant discount.
-
Step 3
Participants work through the course at their own pace, completing one each week. Your group will have access to the course for 14 weeks. We recommend you send emails each fortnight to follow up participants who have signed up. We will provide you with sample emails you can send. This helps keep the participants ‘on track’.
-
Step 4
You could start the course with a time for everyone to meet up, whether online or in person, and share how they hope to benefit from the course. This is an optional but a great way of gaining momentum to kickstart individuals beginning to take part.

Steve Day

"I have learned that I can cope with stressful circumstances by changing what I am focused on. I used to feel trapped and powerless but now I am learning to change my focus by choosing to think about all my blessings and praying for others. I also found the sessions on setting boundaries and allowing for margins was very helpful."

"After the last twelve months, I feel well and truly spent and something needed to change for me, which is why I signed up to take part in this course. The analogy of the swimming pool and assessing the water levels was eye opening, as I realised the water levels have been sitting at neck level for twelve months. So assessing my water levels will stay with me and taking part in this course has been very helpful."
